About Benedict College
Founded in 1870 under the auspices of the American Baptist Home Mission Society, Benedict College began educating the recently emancipated people of African descent. Benedict College is named after Mrs. Bathseba A. Benedict for her generous donation of $13,000.00, which went towards the purchase of an eighty acre plantation. In 1894, the institution was chartered as a liberal arts college by the South Legislature and the name was changed from the Benedict Institute College is one of the fastest growing colleges among the 39 United Negro College Fund (UNCF) institutions.

About the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science
Created as a result of the unrest during the civil rights movement, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science became the only minority health sciences academic center west of the Mississippi River. The program was founded in 1966 in response to the lack of adequate medical facilities in the South Central Los Angeles area. It is one of four African American medical schools in the country. To assure a continuous stream of young minority students who are prepared to enter health careers, a medical magnet high school is located on campus.

About Haskell Indian Nations University
Founded in 1984, Haskell Indian Nations University started as an educational program focusing on agricultural education for grades one through five under the name the United States Indian Industrial Training School. Over time, the school grew to include grades sixth through twelfth. In 1935, the school dropped its secondary school and evolved into a vocational-technical institution, and in 1970 began a junior college curriculum. The school name changed to Haskell Indian Junior College. Finally, in 1993 after a recommendation from the Haskell Board of Regents, the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs approved the name to be changed to Haskell Indian Nations University. The student body consists of federally recognized tribes and offers programs that will prepare them to enter baccalaureate programs in areas such as elementary teacher education, American Indian studies, business administration, and environmental science. Haskell continues to integrate American Indian/Alaska Native culture into all of its curricula.

About Jackson State University
Founded as Natchez Seminary in 1877 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society, the school was established as Natchez, Mississippi "for the moral, religious and intellectual improvement of Christian leaders of the colored people of Mississippi and the neighboring states". In 1882 the school was moved to Jackson, Mississippi, and in 1889 the curriculum was expanded and the name was changed to Jackson College. In 1940, the state assumed support of the college and expanded the curriculum to include a graduate program and bachelor's programs in the arts and sciences. The name was changed to Jackson State University. The School of Allied Health Sciences follows the mission of the University by providing high quality education, community-based healthcare organization research, consultative and technical assistance statewide and to the Metro Jackson area. The school offers bachelors and masters programs in healthcare administration, public health, and communicative disorders. Jackson State University wants to establish itself as the first school of public health based at a Historically Black College.

About Medgar Evers College

Founded in 1969 as a result of community efforts and is named in memory of the slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers. The school was established to meet the educational needs of the Central Brooklyn community. The student population is about 92% black and includes persons from the Caribbean and Africa. About Meharry Medical College

Meharry Medical College is one of the nation’s oldest and largest historically black academic health science centers dedicated to educating physicians, dentists, researchers, and health policy experts. Founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College, Meharry was the first medical school in the South for African Americans. It was chartered separately in 1915. About Morehouse School of Medicine
Built on the premise of providing health care to underserved communities, Morehouse College established the Morehouse School of Medicine in 1975. The National Medical Association endorsed the program after a feasibility study revealed the lack of health care to the poor living in rural and inner city communities. About Morgan State University

Morgan State University was created in 1973 and is an expansion of Morgan State College. Originally established in 1867 by the Baltimore Conference of Methodist Episcopal Churches, the school was known as the Centenary Biblical Institute and focused on educating young black males to become ministers. The school later began to educate both men and women, and in 1890 was named Morgan College after Reverend Lyttleton Morgan, the first chairman of its Board of Trustees. In 1939 the school was purchased by the state of Maryland in response to a state study that determined the need to provide more opportunities to black citizens. In 1975 the State Legislature designated Morgan as a university, and gave it authority to offer doctorates. Today, Morgan State University boosts a strong masters program in Public Health and is the first HBCU to grant doctoral degrees in Public Health.

About Oglala Lakota College of Nursing
Resurrected in 1986 after the closing of the University of South Dakota’s satellite program, the Oglala Lakota College of Nursing Program was developed to serve the residents of the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations and the rural border communities in Nebraska and South Dakota. The program’s curriculum is designed to incorporate traditional Lakota values that include the promotion of individuals and families to maintain and restore balance and well-being through its cultural framework. OLC was one of the first tribally controlled colleges in the United States.

About Southern University of Baton Rouge
The Southern University system consists of four campuses: Baton Rogue, New Orleans, Shreveport, and a Law Center. The school was founded in New Orleans in 1881 by Pinckney Pinchback, the first black governor in the United States, and other black politicians to create an institution for persons of color. The school later relocated to Baton Rouge in 1914. Today, Southern University is the only historically black Land Grant university system in the United States.
