Purpose

To facilitate the integration of data science into biomedical curricula nationally, this FOA seeks to support a cohort of institutions that will work collaboratively and collectively to produce curricular materials that are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).

Purpose
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), under the Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) initiative, is to provide time-limited, catalytic support for standards-related activities in areas relevant to the NIH basic, translational, and clinical research mission.
One of the goals of this program is to establish a repository of software developed under this program. Once implemented, funded individual projects are expected to deposit their software including the source codes and documentations at the repository, allowing centralized access and dissemination, consistent with achieving the goals of this program.For the purpose of this FOA, data and metadata standards are documented agreements on representation, format, definition, structuring, tagging, transmission, manipulation, use, and management of data. They can also be thought of as rules to describe how data are recorded. These include data exchange, data format, and data semantics.

Purpose
The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications for a coordination center that will narrow the gap between the availability of biomedical big data and the ability of biomedical scientists to effectively utilize such data accurately, effectively, and efficiently. Achieving this goal requires: (1) bringing together individuals involved in training and career development programs to network and share experiences; and (2) engaging individuals developing open educational resources in meaningful dialogue to ensure that the resources they develop will be freely available and easy to access by the broader biomedical community. By the end of the award period, the Training Coordination Center (TCC) will be expected to have: (1) developed a network of scientists involved in biomedical big data science and (2) produced a discovery index that serves as a primary source for personalized access to publicly available biomedical data science educational resources.

Purpose
The primary purpose of the NIH BD2K Enhancing Diversity in Biomedical Data Science program is to provide resources for eligible institutions to implement innovative approaches to research education for diverse students in Big Data science, including those from underrepresented backgrounds in biomedical research. Through this program, eligible institutions will establish partnerships with newly established NIH BD2K Centers to design and implement novel approaches of data science education that emphasize research experiences and curriculum development at the applicant institution. Participating institutions should collectively consider all factors that are likely to prepare students and/or faculty to improve exposure, knowledge, and competency in Big Data science. It is expected that long-term collaborations will be developed to allow faculty and students to have substantive and continuous interactions for the duration of the funded project period and beyond.

BD2K Supplements to Support Interoperability of NIH Funded Biomedical Data Repositories (Admin Supp) PA-15-144 Expired

Purpose
NIH is accepting administrative supplement requests to support projects that will establish or improve interoperability among NIH funded biomedical data repositories. Improved interoperability is expected to lead to increased efficiency of repositories’ operations and cost reductions, which are significant factors of the NIH’s long-term sustainability plans for the biomedical data repositories.
Each supplement request should be associated to a collaborative project consisting of a biomedical data repository supported by an active NIH-funded parent grant, and one or more collaborating sites that together implement the interoperability goals of this FOA. The collaborating sites may be other biomedical data repositories, or may provide computational tools and data standards, or perform other activities that facilitate interoperability among data repositories. Supplement requests will only be accepted from active NIH-funded parent grants that primarily support biomedical data repositories with an overall annual budget above $500,000 in direct costs

Purpose
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support high quality and impactful conferences/scientific meetings that are convened by data science related organizations whose missions focus on biomedical data science. This FOA, which uses the NIH conference cooperative agreement program (U13), is part of the NIH-wide initiative, Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K). Data science related organizations have a critical role in advancing biomedical data science but often depend on meetings to carry out their work. This FOA will support high quality conferences or meetings that are relevant to the biomedical data science needs of the participating Institutes and Centers of the National Institutes of Health. For the purpose of this FOA, a conference is defined as a gathering, such as in the form of a symposium, seminar, scientific meeting, workshop, or any other organized and formal meeting where persons assemble to coordinate, exchange, and disseminate information, or to explore or clarify a defined subject, problem, or area of knowledge. Applicants representing data science related organizations may request support for one or a series of meetings over multiple years that address areas of data science aligned with the goals of the NIH BD2K program.

What is BD2K?
The mission of the NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) initiative is to enable biomedical scientists to capitalize more fully on the Big Data being generated by those research communities. With advances in technologies, these investigators are increasingly generating and using large, complex, and diverse datasets. Consequently, the biomedical research enterprise is increasingly becoming data-intensive and data-driven. However, the ability of researchers to locate, analyze, and use Big Data (and more generally all biomedical and behavioral data) is often limited for reasons related to access to relevant software and tools, expertise, and other factors. BD2K aims to develop the new approaches, standards, methods, tools, software, and competencies that will enhance the use of biomedical Big Data by supporting research, implementation, and training in data science and other relevant fields.
